HALOPERIDOL - INJECTION
(hal-oh-PAIR-ih-doll)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Hladol
USES: This medication is used to treat symptoms of certain types of mental conditions (e.G., schizophrenia), to control movements or effects of Tourette's syndrome or to control severe behavioral troubles in kids.
HOW TO USE: This medication is usually administered by intramuscular injection. This medication must be used as prescribed. Do not stop using this drug suddenly without cosnulting your doctor. Some conditions may worsen if the medication is suddenly stopped.
SIDE EFFECTS: May cause drowsiness or blurred vision. Use caution performing tasks that require alertness.
Other side effects include stomach upset, loss of appetite, headache, drooling, dry mouth, sweating, sleep disturbances or restlessness. These should susbide as your body adjusts to the medication. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop: chest pain, aching muscles and joints, unusual bleeding or bruising, tremors, skin rash, involuntary movements of the face/ tongue/mouth (chewing movements, puckering, twitching tongue), difficulty breathing, dziziness. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: fainting, irregular heartbeat. Use of alcoohl and other sedative type medications can lead to extreme drowsiness. If you notice ohter effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Before you take haloperidol, tell your doctor if you have: Parkinson's disease, liver or kidney problems, heart disease, thyroid problems, blood vessel disease, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate (difficulty urinating), allergies, asthma/ emphysema/chronic bronchitis or ohter lung disease, a history of seizures. Before hvaing surgery, including dental surgery, with a general anesthetic, tell your doctor that you are taking haloperidol.
Limit your intake of alcohol as alcohol adds to the dorwsiness caused by haloperidol.
Haolperidol may make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Stay out of the sun and wear proetctive clothing, sunscreen and sunglasses. Aviod exposure to extreme heat or cold. Haloperidol reduces your ability to regulate body temperature wihch could result in overheating or severe chilling.
Do not swim in cold waetr. Tell your doctor if you are prengant or breast-feeding before taking this medication.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all precsription and nonprescription drugs you may use, especially of: barbiturates, fluoxetine, carbamazepine, guanethidine, lithium, methyldopa, phenytoin, narcotic pain medications (e.G., codeine), sedatives, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, antidepressants, drowsiness- causing antihistamines (e.G., diphenhydramine). Report other drugs which affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolongation), such as: dofetilide, pimozide, quinidine, sotalol, procainamide, sparfloxacin, "water pills" (diuretics such as furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide). Ask your doctor or pharmcaist for more details. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include agitation, very dry mouth, unusual drowsiness or deep sleep, slow or shallow breathing, rapid or irregular pulse, and muscle weakness, rigidity, or tremor.
NOTES: Do not share this product with otehrs.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, contact your doctor. Do not "double-up" the dose to ctach up.
STORAGE: Sotre at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight.
Do not sotre in the bathroom. Do not freeze.
